What to Expect on Your First Visit

Your first visit in our practice is an important event. During this visit, we want to develop an understanding of your dental needs and offer our treatment recommendations with your goals in mind. Being well-prepared for your appointment will ensure that Dr. Shaw has all of the needed information to provide the best possible care for you. It also will help relieve any unnecessary anxiety you may be feeling.

We begin by spending time getting to know you and understanding your dental health. We would like to know more about:

 

  • Any current discomfort or dental challenges
  • Your previous dental visits
  • Any changes you would like to make to your smile

 

This information will help us address your current needs and understand how to best approach your care. We also want to learn about your physical health and make sure that we do everything we can to take extra special care of you.

Our initial examination includes:

 

  • Necessary digital x-rays
  • Gum measurements to check for infection
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Electronic cavity detection to look for early signs of decay
  • Thorough evaluation of your teeth, jaw joints and gums

 

We work with you to arrive at a treatment plan that meets your scheduling and budget requirements.

  • Why aren't you a preferred provider for my insurance?

    This is a common and important question from many prospective patients, and it is important to note that we do file with most insurance companies, and they typically pay us directly. 


    The reason we are not an in-network or preferred provider for most plans is not simple, but the most straightforward answer is that we are not able to provide the patient focused care we prioritize and be listed as preferred providers by most insurance companies. When choosing between having more patients, and being able to practice patient focused care, our core values make the decision clear for us.

  • What does being out of network mean to me and my family?

    We do file with most insurance companies, and they typically pay us directly which means there will be little or no difference in what you need to do when seeing an out of network dentist. Your out of pocket costs may be slightly higher. Often, but not always, we find these cost impacts to be negligible when viewed against the full costs of a quality dental care plan.

However, we do not offer in-office whitening, because we believe that custom tray options are more cost-effective and produce the same results in the long run.
